The dean of nursing at Collin College died last week of complications from COVID-19.

In a letter to faculty, college president Neil Matkin praised Leachs efforts to advance the nursing program and shared a request from her husband that Dr. Leachs untimely passing not be politicized or used to attack anyone, let alone the college and the programs she loved, he said.

Leach arrived at Collin College two years ago after working at several schools over the years, including Midwestern State University, North Central Texas College and Vernon College. She is the second Collin College nursing staff member to die from COVID-19 complications.

Retired nurse Iris Meda, 70, died last November, after contracting COVID-19. Meda had come out of retirement to train the next generation of nurses at Collin College. Her family believes that while teaching she contracted the virus, despite abiding by health and safety protocols.

Collin College has made national headlines over the last year as staff members raised concerns about the schools response to the pandemic. Some faculty alleged the college let them go as retaliation for being critical of administrators downplaying COVID-19.

More recently, history professor Michael Phillips posted a picture on his Twitter account of the slideshow during a back-to-school meeting at Collin College that seemed to deter staff from making references to masks.

Bond Program And Current Master Plan

The residents of Collin County approved a $600 million bond proposition in May 2017 to fund the college district's Master Plan. Master Plan projects which have been funded by the bond included the Technical Campus, the Wylie Campus, the Public Safety Training Center in McKinney, and safety upgrades to existing campuses. Outstanding projects funded by the bond include planned campuses in Celina and Farmersville, an information technology building at the Frisco Campus, welcome centers at the college's existing campuses, and other upgrades to improve student experiences throughout the district.

The Vocational Nursing Program is a new program at Collin College as of January 2021. The Associate Degree Nursing Programs and the RN-to-BSN Program at Collin College are fully accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing . An LVN is a Licensed Vocational Nurse. An LVN is also known as an LPN in other American States. LVNs/LPNs work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse , Nurse Practitioner , physician, physician's assistant or dentist. They can perform basic nursing duties independently and assist RNs and physicians in more complex nursing situations. Collin College in Texas, previously called Collin County Community College District began by teaching classes at area high schools in 1985. It has grown to become the only public college in the county. It currently has over 100 degree and certificate programs, and enrolls over 53,000 students.

The college offers classes at its network of campuses, area businesses, or online. Campuses are located in McKinney , Plano , Allen , and Rockwall .

Nursing Programs

Collin College is the only Center of Excellence in Nursing Education in the state of Texas. This designation has been given by the National League for Nursing to only 19 of the more than 1800 nursing programs in the country.

Associate Degree in Nursing

This program is for unlicensed students who want to become practicing Registered Nurses . Courses for the ADN program are only offered at the Central Park Campus. Students are admitted to the program in the fall and in the spring. Students that complete this program will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree, and will be allowed to take the RN licensing exam.

To be able to apply to the ADN program, students need to take the prerequisite classes of Statistics, Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and Microbiology, with a 2.5 GPA. They also need to submit their transcripts and TSI test results, take the PSB Nursing School Aptitude exam, and show proof of immunizations.

The partnership will prepare students for a successful transition to bachelors degree programs at online, competency-based university

AUSTIN WGU Texas and Collin College announced a partnership to support students seeking bachelors degrees after completing their associate degrees. The partnership creates pathways for Collin College students, graduates, and employees to work toward a bachelors or masters degree and further their education at WGU Texas. Collin College is the only public college based in Collin County and serves more than 56,000 credit and continuing education students annually.

Tarrant County College and Collin College have announced they have signed an agreement that will make it easier for registered nurses to transfer their community college credits to Collin College in pursuit of a bachelors degree in nursing.

Under this agreement, TCC alumni holding an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing, or ADN, can seamlessly transition to Collin College to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree, without losing any credits. Collin Colleges RN-to-BSN program offers a cost-effective educational experience that accommodates nurses busy work schedules.
